Google AdWords to the Rescue

Google's AdWords

In this day and age the internet is quite the crowded place. With so many different outlets all vying for attention, marketing space, and customers; it’s a wonder how anyone is capable of successfully competing on the web. However, there is a product that makes it possible for anyone to compete on the web regardless of budget size. That product is known as Google AdWords and it is bringing small businesses everywhere to forefront of their niche market on the web.

Google AdWords is an advertising product that advertisers can use to display ads on Google Search, Google Search Network, and Google Display Network and can be targeted on a local, national, and international level. For clarification, Google Search is the search you know and love on Google.com, the Search Network comprises all of Google Search Partners such as Ask.com and AOL Search, and the Display Network is Google’s vast network of affiliated sites that host Google ads such as YouTube.com, Gmail, and over one million web, video, gaming, and mobile sites. This enormous platform reaches over 80% of internet users in North America alone and more than 60% of internet users around the world!

One of the reasons Google AdWords is so cost efficient is that it enables advertisers to focus their ads on their target market through the use of keywords. Users viewing these ads have already indicated an interest in a relevant topic pertaining to the ad and, therefore, pertaining to the service, product, and/or business the ad is portraying. For example, when a user enters a query into Google Search, such as ‘buy refrigerator’, only relevant information pertaining to that phrase will be displayed. The user has expressed an interest in purchasing a refrigerator and is actively searching for what businesses have to offer through targeted and focused advertisements.

AdWords Example

One doesn’t need to be concerned with costs when using Google AdWords because they provide the option to prepay in addition to other methods that give you control over the amount you want to spend. The advantage lies in the pricing model used, called performance-based advertising, where the advertiser only pays for measurable results. This mainly consists of cost-per-click, where you pay only when a user clicks on your ads for a price that you can put a cap on, and cost-per-thousand impressions, where you are charged per one thousand impressions (impressions are the number of times an ad is shown to a user). Plus, advertisers set a daily budget which is used to control expenses because Google will never charge the advertiser more than the specified budget.

In short, Google AdWords is an incredibly quick and easy way to jump to the top of the search results but it is also incredibly difficult to master. This platform enables you to reach an unbelievable amount of people on any scale around the world while giving you the power to target new, relevant users who are interested in what you have to offer, all at a budget you are comfortable with. If you would like help harnessing this amazing resource, we invite you to consult Cascade e-Commerce Solutions Inc. As a Google Certified Partner, we are more than capable of assisting you with this matter. Recess Before Lunch

A girl with her school lunch

Highline Public Schools is hoping to utilize a simple change to their daily schedule that has massive potential for change in student behavior and performance in school. This schedule change is known as Recess Before Lunch (RBL).

RBL reverses the school system’s longstanding practice of having lunch first followed by recess resulting in students rushing through lunch and wasting food in order to leave for recess earlier. This new schedule switches things up in order to improve food intake by allowing more time to calmly and casually consume food, reduce food waste, increase milk consumption, and improve the overall quality of dining experiences for the students. This, in turn, benefits in-class behavior and performance because students return to class calmer and ready to learn and are no longer distracted by hunger or poor dietary habits resulting in fewer visits to the school nurse and fewer discipline problems.

The RBL schedule has been garnering attention in recent years with positive results from Montana elementary schools that have tested this interesting school wellness strategy. Thirteen Highline elementary schools have implemented the RBL schedule including Cedarhurst, Gregory Heights, Hilltop, Madrona, and Shorewood Elementary as the most recent schools. These schools will be measuring food waste, school nurse visits, academic performance, and behavior. For more information go to http://www.hsd401.org/.

Why We Love WordPress

Heart Shaped Boxes

The WordPress trademark “W” icon is found all over the web. If you haven’t noticed it yet, you will now that you are looking for it. Still it would be easy to underestimate the number of WordPress sites since only a fraction of their designs highlight the “W”. Would you have guessed that this is a WordPress site?

(View the source and see the letters “wp” throughout the code.)

WordPress is a content management system for websites and blogs. The reason for the “W” icon’s prevalence is because WordPress is a fantastic tool.

WordPress really distinguishes itself from the average content manage system. It is all the little things that really make the difference. One of those distinguishing characteristics is their separation of pages and blog posts. This makes it incredibly easy to run a website and manage a blog. All the blog posts are automatically partitioned into a separate section of the site devoted to the blog. When using a certain WordPress Plugin, your most recent blog posts can be automatically featured in a Recent Blog Posts section of your site. You can find an example of one of our implementations featuring this tool at our client’s site, www.needamortgagenow.com.

We are big fans the functionality that is available through WordPress. WordPress offers a tool with great utility through “Plugins”. WordPress Plugins are website features created by a community of WordPress developers. These Plugins are website features that can simply be plugged in to existing sites. Think of it as a virtual electrical outlet which can take whatever appliance your site needs. We have clients using Plugins for slideshows, calendars, photo galleries, and more. A business with frequent events and activities might benefit from a calendar Plugin, such as the one we setup for Angle Lake Neighborhood Church (www.anglelake.org/calendar/). We were even able to help Studio Mene (www.studiomene.com) have a website that can toggle between English and Japanese via a WordPress Plugin. Our favorite WordPress Plugin is the SEO All-In One tool. This helps the site’s contributors comply with SEO guidelines using little to no effort. The tool uses a fill in the blank form which generates essential HTML elements for SEO.

The ability for the less tech-savvy to manage a site is what our web designers and clients appreciate most about WordPress. Content can be added and modified without any knowledge of HTML or CSS. It is as simple as clicking a button to create a new page. Creating the content for the page is similar to using MS Word. Simply type your content and insert pictures or videos. WordPress will automatically apply your theme and styles to the content you ad.

WordPress themes allow the average client to have substantial influence on the design with minimal effort. By browsing through themes, a client can choose a starting point. Once a theme is decided upon, elements from other themes can readily be implemented too. These themes allow a client to have a great deal of creative influence if they wish, without requiring the technical knowledge. A site can be as close to or as far from a template as desired.

The typical WordPress site by Cascade e-Commerce Solutions Inc. has all the functionality of a WordPress site, but without the appearance of a cookie cutter creation. CeSI sites are unique, professional and allow anyone to generate the content.

Culinary Bravery – A Restaurant Review

Some of the dishes from our review

Once every month we use our newsletter as an excuse to get out from behind our desks and take a company trip for a local restaurant review. For the staff of CeSI, it is becoming more than just a free meal. It is a chance to push our culinary boundaries.

For most of my life I have pretended that I make an interesting and daring meal choice when I choose Panda Express. This past month however, I decided to admit to myself that I have no clue what real Chinese food is.

Our monthly trip was the perfect opportunity to step out of my comfort zone. When given the chance to pick this month’s restaurant I was careful to pick something different. Typically I would have tried to find the area’s best burger. Not this time, I was on a mission.

I went online to find something different and authentic. I went to Yelp.com to find what people in the area recommended. Knowing others recommend the restaurant gave me the confidence to try something different. If this decision had a studio audience and a celebrity host, going to Yelp was the equivalent of asking the audience. With any chance of eating somewhere interesting ever again on the line I had to make the right decision. The restaurant I decided upon was Szechuan First in Kent, WA.

You can usually get a good sense of a restaurant from the number of people in the place. So my nerves were worsened when there were plenty of empty tables. However, as soon as the first dish arrived my fears were alleviated. This food looked good, smelled good, and most importantly tasted good. And by the time we left, almost every table in the restaurant was occupied. We beat the rush.

We all ordered something different and shared all of our orders. We may have gone a bit overboard; apparently our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. Between five people we ordered:

  • Kung Pow Chicken
  • Fried Dumplings
  • Smoked Duck
  • Beef & Broccoli
  • Chicken with Vegetables
  • Egg Rolls
  • Sweet Potato Pancakes
  • Ong-Choy (aka Swamp Cabbage)

This came with soup and tea as well.

Let’s do the math on this. That’s eight plates of food. Five bowls of soup. Five cups of tea. Eight plus five, carry the one, round to the nearest whole number… Yup, that is a lot of food for five people.

As we ate were able to identify a few things that really set Szechuan First apart. Too many restaurants fill your plate with vegetables without enough meat, this was not the case at this restaurant, plenty of both were provided. Another important factor was that each dish had its own flavor. Another problem with many Chinese food restaurants, many use the same sauce for all the dishes and everything tastes the same. All too often this same generic sauce ends up soaking the vegetables, making them soggy and unappetizing. Neither was the case here. In fact, one of the advantages of ordering so many things was that we were able to taste so many different flavors, and each was unique.

The Fried Dumplings were awesome. Even though they brought us a plate of probably more than 30 dumplings it was the first dish to disappear. This was an appetizer, but if I went back I might just order a plate of these for myself.

The Smoked Duck was one of the day’s specials. Unfortunately this was the one dish that we weren’t all that crazy about. The duck was a bit dry, but the crunchy skin was tasty. I don’t eat a lot of duck, so it is hard to say if the issue is that I didn’t enjoy how it was prepared or if I just don’t appreciate duck.

The Sweet Potato Pancakes were really tasty and different than what any of us usually have for dessert. This was similar to an orange colored donut. It was crisp on the outside but sweet and sugary on the inside with a sweet filling too. It tasted great, and since a sweet potato is close enough to a vegetable we could pretend it wasn’t completely unhealthy for us.

Sweet Potato Pancake

What I ordered was the Szechuan Chicken. This was reportedly pretty spicy. In my experience anything spicy can’t taste too bad. Another constant among foods is anything chicken is usually alright too. Since I was nervous about branching out, a spicy chicken dish seemed alright. The dish actually wasn’t all that spicy, which is good because it would have covered up some of the other flavors. This was a really flavorful dish. The meat had been marinated in a really yummy salty sauce. If you’re trying to cut back on your salt stay away, otherwise make sure someone in your group orders this if you go to Szechuan First.

Probably the most interesting dish that we tried was Ong-Choy. We saw this brought to another table and asked what it was. When we heard the name we looked for it on the menu, but couldn’t find it. This was a traditional Asian dish that wasn’t on the menu. We were excited, it was akin to ordering off the secret menu, but instead of Animal Fries it was Ong-Choy (aka Swamp Cabbage). Imagine a salty and buttered green bean with garlic. As a kid who always hated eating his green beans at dinner, I can say that these were surprisingly good.

The Mystery Vegetable

The décor of the restaurant was really nice too. The tables were marble or faux marble, the walls had wood etched drawings and Chinese characters. There are plenty of restaurants where you want to eat your meal and take off, but this was a place you could stay and relax.

We actually stayed for a while after we finished. We sat sipping tea, talking about our unique meal. Admittedly it might have been in part that none of us wanted to head back to work. But it was a nice place to sit and enjoy the afternoon regardless.

By the end of the meal my taste buds weren’t offended and my fears were unwarranted. I was pleasantly surprised and even though my desire to test my culinary bravery has ceased, I would gladly go back. Apparently so would my coworkers and rightfully so.

Unfortunately I won’t be able to feel as adventurous anymore when I go to Panda Express.
