Lessons Learned from an "Old Fart"

Some businesses have treated mature employees as "obsolete" and have targeted these employees in layoffs. As a result, historically, these employees have had little choice but to opt for temporary jobs.

However, one individual has found that by acquiring experience that isn't in the text books, he has leverage regardless of his progressing years on this planet. Self-proclaimed "old fart" (and certainly a character) Fred Macary has a few lessons he is willing to share.

    Ranking Remediation

Businesses that developed simple text-dense websites in the early years of the Internet (before 2001) benefited from a phenomenon known as “grandfathering”. If these businesses listed their websites in the major search engines before the engines began charging for inclusion or pay per click, their sites stayed in the search engines for free because the search engines were each trying to compile the biggest, most relevant database.

However, over the past year many businesses that had had high rankings for several years saw their rankings drop significantly (from first page to 16th page or below). This is because the algorithms (formulas) utilized by the search engines have evolved continuously while the websites have not kept up with current international standards.

Small Business Owners and Vacations: Are the Two Compatible?

Yes, yes, yes. In fact, necessary. Some entrepreneurs believe that if they go on vacation for two weeks, their business will fall apart. Yet vacationing for only a day or two isn't enough time to provide the refreshing break that is needed. Finding vacation "balance" is the goal.
