Ferries are a staple here in Seattle. Travelers love them, local commuters ride them daily to and from work, and Ferry, ferry boat, ferries, seattle, downtown seattle, ferry sketchfamilies make a day out of them on occasion. They’re even shown in movies and shows in which Seattle is featured. There’s a good reason for it too. The views from the ferry are spectacular, both of the city and the islands as well as the Sound. They’re a great way to commute between islands that would otherwise take hours of driving.

The Washington Ferry system has ferries going out and coming in from different locations around the sound. A couple major locations from the Seattle terminal are Bremerton and Bainbridge Island. I personally love Bainbridge Island.

Bainbridge Island is such a cute town you can walk to once you get off the ferry and so many of the buildings are gorgeous. There’s a nearby park, multiple museums, adorable little shops, great restaurants and, my favorite, Mora Iced Creamery. Another one of my favorite things on Bainbridge is a shop called Churchmouse Yarns & Teas. (It is so adorable!)

Bremerton is a fun place to visit. There are a couple of museums and parks, the Bremerton Boardwalk, multiple movie theaters and a lavender farm. There are little shops and restaurants to explore.

Ferries are fun! They’re not just for getting to and from other locations, they can be an activity of their own. Recently my husband and I went on a ferry ride on the 4th of July in order to see fireworks from the water. It worked fairly well. The ferries have fantastic views on all sides, from the city, to the islands and views of Mt. Rainier. They have a handy little cafeteria that sells all sorts of snacks, so if you’re making a day out of the ferries, bring a couple bucks. Another time, our church youth group did an event where we went on a ferry ride on New Year’s Eve and timed it to be on the water for the countdown. We were able to see the city and all the fireworks! It was great fun.

So, whether you’re new here or have lived here your whole life, make it a point to explore a little more. Get out on the water, visit the towns across the Puget Sound and make an adventure out of it.
